ST. LOUIS — A 68-year-old man is facing six felony charges after authorities say he stole three air-conditioning units from a St. Louis church and later sold them to a recycling business.
According to a probable cause statement filed Sept. 4, Dawud Shabazz is accused of taking the units from Rose Hill Baptist Church, 3833 St. Ferdinand Ave., on June 28.
Investigators say surveillance video captured the thefts and was later used to identify Shabazz. Court records allege both the air-conditioning units and the protective railings surrounding them sustained losses valued above the felony threshold.
Authorities also allege Shabazz sold the three units to St. Louis Metal and Recycling shortly after they were taken.
Shabazz is charged with three counts of stealing $750 or more and three counts of first-degree property damage.
Court records also reference another open stealing case and state Shabazz previously failed to appear for a hearing. A judge ordered him held without bond pending further court proceedings.
The charges are allegations. Shabazz is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
