The FBI maintains a public guide explaining common fraud schemes and warning signs that can help residents protect their money and personal information.

The resource covers crimes including phishing, identity theft, investment fraud, government impersonation, romance scams and schemes that target older adults. Many begin with an unexpected call, email, social media message or text designed to pressure a person into acting quickly.

Residents should independently verify who is contacting them, avoid sending money through unusual payment methods and never provide account credentials or verification codes to an unexpected caller.

Internet-enabled fraud can be reported to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center. Anyone facing an immediate threat should contact local law enforcement.
