ST. LOUIS — Soprano Julia Bullock, a St. Louis native and Grammy winner, is scheduled to make her St. Louis Symphony Orchestra debut in concerts Friday, Oct. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 31, at Powell Hall.
Music Director Stéphane Denève will conduct the program, which pairs Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 with George Walker’s Folksongs for Orchestra and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, known as the Pastoral.
The Friday performance begins at 10:30 a.m.; Saturday’s begins at 7:30 p.m., according to the orchestra’s October concert schedule. Ticket information is available through the SLSO’s calendar and box office at 314-534-1700.
Bullock will sing the Barber work, a setting of James Agee’s writing about childhood memories. The orchestra’s program notes, published Oct. 25, connect the three works through ideas of home, memory and a sense of place.
Walker’s orchestral work draws on four African American spirituals. Beethoven’s Sixth follows scenes of country life, including a storm and the music that follows its passing.
The orchestra identifies these performances as Bullock’s SLSO debut. Her recording Walking in the Dark earned a Grammy for best classical solo vocal album.
The full Friday and Saturday program is separate from Wednesday’s one-hour Symphony Happy Hour presentation of Beethoven’s Sixth. Patrons should select the intended date and program when reviewing ticket options.
