FENTON, Mo. — A 71-year-old Fredericktown man faces first-degree murder and armed criminal action charges after a fatal shooting that Jefferson County investigators believe began with a road rage incident.

Michael F. Miller is accused of shooting and killing a man in the 10 block of Ashwood Drive, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around 7:30 p.m. and found the victim dead with apparent gunshot wounds. Miller was still at the scene and was detained, the sheriff’s office said.

Authorities allege Miller admitted to the shooting after being detained and that a witness statement supported his account. The release does not explain what led to the suspected road rage confrontation.

Miller was taken into custody without incident and is being held without bond at the Jefferson County Jail, according to the release.

Investigators believe the shooting was an isolated incident and said there was no continuing danger to the public. The release did not identify the man who was killed.

The sheriff’s office credited Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney Trisha Stefanski and her staff with obtaining the warrant.

The charges are allegations. Miller is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
