CREVE COEUR, Mo. — Voters will decide November 3 whether to authorize up to $14 million in general obligation bonds to replace the city’s Government Center on its existing property.
Proposition G would help pay for demolition of the current building and the design, construction, furnishing and equipment of a replacement. The city estimates a total project budget of $24 million, combining the proposed borrowing with $10 million in city funds saved for the project.
The city says its current debt service property tax rate, 8.2 cents per $100 of assessed valuation, would be extended for up to 20 years. The proposal is described as maintaining that rate; borrowing and continued tax collections would still be involved.
The St. Louis County Board of Elections’ informational ballot content report lists a four-sevenths majority requirement for passage.
City officials say the approximately 75-year-old building was originally Weber Elementary School and was converted for municipal use after the city bought it in 1987. The city argues that replacement would improve accessibility and reduce maintenance needs.
Residents can ask questions and tour the building during the Ward 3 town hall at 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 28, at 300 N. New Ballas Road. The city says residents from any ward may attend.
Approval would authorize the bond issue. A no vote would withhold that authorization.
