TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Byron Donalds made American political history Tuesday.

The Republican congressman from Southwest Florida became the first Black Republican elected governor in the United States of America and Florida’s first Black governor.

That distinction deserves to stand on its own.

Donalds defeated Democrat David Jolly in the race to succeed Gov. Ron DeSantis, completing a political rise that has taken him from the Florida Legislature to Congress and now the governor’s office.

The history is clear. The man behind the historic moment has a political record worth knowing.

From Brooklyn to Florida

Donalds grew up in Brooklyn, New York, raised by a single mother.

He later moved to Florida and earned a bachelor’s degree in finance and marketing from Florida State University in 2002. Before entering elected office, he worked in banking, finance and insurance.

Donalds was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2016 and served two terms, working on issues that included education, banking, insurance and criminal justice.

He was elected to Congress in 2020 and began representing Florida’s 19th Congressional District in 2021.

In Washington, Donalds served on committees dealing with financial services and government oversight and developed a national profile as one of the Republican Party’s most visible Black conservatives.

His Political Identity

Donalds has advocated lower taxes, reduced government regulation, school choice, stronger immigration enforcement and conservative social policies.

He also became a prominent political ally of President Donald Trump.

That relationship became an important part of Donalds’ national political profile and his campaign for governor.

Second Chances and His Own Past

Donalds has publicly discussed legal trouble from his youth.

At 18, he was arrested on a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge that was later dismissed through a diversion program.

At 21, he faced a felony charge connected to a bad-check scheme. He pleaded no contest, served probation and later had the record expunged.

Donalds has described those experiences as youthful mistakes and has connected them to his views about redemption and second chances.

As a Florida legislator, he supported bipartisan criminal justice reforms involving youthful offenders, reentry opportunities and the sealing of some criminal records.

Controversies That Followed Him to National Politics

Donalds’ congressional record has also generated significant criticism.

After the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, he voted to support objections to electoral votes from Arizona and Pennsylvania during Congress’ certification of the 2020 presidential election.

In 2024, Donalds faced national criticism after remarks about Black families during the Jim Crow era.

Democrats accused him of minimizing the brutality and discrimination of segregation. Donalds disputed that interpretation, saying his comments addressed marriage rates and family structure rather than praising Jim Crow.

His public statements on immigration, voting and other political issues have also been examined by fact-checking organizations, with some claims found accurate and others rated inaccurate or missing important context.

Now Comes Governing

Donalds’ victory moves him from federal legislative power into executive leadership.

As governor, he will oversee Florida’s state agencies, influence the state budget, sign or veto legislation and help determine policy affecting more than 20 million residents.

His election also extends Republican control of Florida’s governor’s office.

But on election night, one fact rises above the political arguments surrounding his record:

Byron Donalds is the first Black Republican elected governor in the United States of America.

It is a political first that now belongs in the nation’s history books.

His record will determine what comes next.

How do you feel about this historic moment, and what do you want to see from Byron Donalds as he prepares to become governor of Florida?
