MADISON, Ill. — One adult was killed and three others were wounded in a shooting Sunday night at Madison Senior High School, where a youth football league championship game was underway, according to the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis.
The Madison Police Department called for assistance around 9:49 p.m. Nov. 1 at the school, 600 Farrish St. Three of the adults who were shot were taken to St. Louis-area hospitals and were reported in stable condition. The fourth was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Major Case Squad was activated at the request of Madison police. Authorities had not announced the victims’ names or identified a suspect in the 8 a.m. Monday release.
Separate spectator footage reviewed, not published
VOTP News STL reviewed a spectator video reportedly recorded during the event, including footage filmed by a man in the bleachers. The recording shows football activity before play appears to stop. The stadium lights appear to go dark, and people can be seen moving onto the field. This is separate from the aftermath video embedded below. VOTP News STL did not publish the spectator recording because the video owner could not be reached to obtain permission.
A physical altercation then develops. The recording does not clearly establish whether those involved were players, spectators or others attending the event.
The man recording repeatedly urges people to leave the area and get into their vehicles. As spectators move toward an exit gate, a crowd forms near the entrance. The man continues warning people to depart and says he will not approach the scene because he fears being struck by gunfire.
Later in the recording, people appear to move away from the gate and back toward the field. Sounds resembling gunshots are then audible, and people duck for cover as others yell. The man says something near his location may have been struck by a bullet. That claim has not been independently verified.
Aftermath footage: The embedded video below documents the scene following the shooting. It does not show the altercation, apparent gunfire or other moments described in the separate spectator recording reviewed by VOTP News STL.
The separate spectator recording reviewed by VOTP News STL does not establish who fired any shots, whether the disturbance was connected to the shooting or what caused the violence. Those questions remain part of the investigation.
