ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — Rain did not keep Janay Mosley from visiting a polling location Tuesday, where she spoke with VOTP News STL about voter participation and her father’s plans to seek the Florissant mayor’s office.

“I’m at the polls in the rain because y’all need to be out here voting,” Mosley said during an Election Day field interview.

Mosley said she was also supporting her father, former Missouri state Rep. Jay Mosley, as he prepares for a possible run for mayor of Florissant. She encouraged people to scan a QR code and support a petition effort aimed at getting him on the ballot.

Jay Mosley represented Missouri’s 68th House District from 2017 to January 2025. When asked why her father should be on the ballot, Janay Mosley pointed to his legislative experience and what she described as his commitment to residents.

“He cares for the people,” she said. “The people support him, so he supports the people.” She also said she hopes his approach would encourage unity in the community.

A message about participating in elections

When VOTP News STL asked why voting matters, Mosley shared an analogy about 13 people on a bus. Five vote to send the bus off a cliff, four vote against it, and four do not vote at all. In her example, the larger number of votes cast determines the outcome.

She used the story to illustrate how decisions can be shaped by those who participate, while those who sit out have no direct say in the result.

“You have to get out there and vote and use your voice,” she said.

What the Florissant petition rules say

Tuesday’s general election is separate from Florissant’s next regular mayoral election, scheduled for April 6, 2027. Under Florissant’s city charter, mayoral candidates are nominated by petition and must obtain signatures from at least 500 registered city voters on forms provided by the city clerk. The charter also establishes a filing window for those petitions.

The QR-code petition discussed in the interview was not independently verified as satisfying the city’s official nomination requirements. The candidate’s ballot status will depend on the applicable filing and verification process.

VOTP News STL will continue following local elections and candidates seeking office across the St. Louis region.
