WASHINGTON — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is accepting public comments on issues surrounding the possible future therapeutic use of drug products containing psychedelic substances.

The agency held a public hearing Monday with federal partners to gather views about how such products might be used in supervised and supportive settings. The discussion focused on future policy and research considerations.

The hearing does not mean the FDA has approved psychedelic drugs for general therapeutic use. Drug products must still meet federal standards for safety, effectiveness and quality before receiving approval.

Written comments may be submitted through the federal rulemaking portal until 11:59 p.m. Eastern on October 5.
