ST. LOUIS — A 46 year old Hazelwood man has been charged with first degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with an August shooting that killed 34 year old Cedric Hubbard of St. Louis.
According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, homicide detectives arrested Demetrice Wright on September 17. The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and issued charges of first degree murder and armed criminal action.
The shooting happened shortly after 1 p.m. August 27 near North Sarah Street and Maffitt Avenue in the Greater Ville neighborhood.
Police said officers arrived and found Hubbard lying on the sidewalk near a convenience store suffering from numerous gunshot wounds. Officers rendered aid until EMS arrived and transported him to an area hospital, where he later died.
According to a probable cause statement filed with Missouri Courts, investigators reviewed surveillance footage that allegedly captured the shooting along with events before and after it occurred.
Investigators allege Wright was seen waiting near the corner before Hubbard approached him. Court records state Hubbard appeared to be unarmed when Wright allegedly shot him multiple times before leaving the scene.
Police said investigators also identified a vehicle allegedly driven by Wright through surveillance footage and determined the license plates were registered to him.
According to the probable cause statement, surveillance footage also allegedly showed Wright making a purchase before the shooting using a Chime debit card. Investigators said the card was later found in his possession.
Court records state Wright acknowledged during an interview that the vehicle and Chime debit card belonged to him and that he was at the scene at the time of the shooting.
The charges are allegations. Wright is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
